This ammonite was found in Deux-Sèvres in France and comes from the Oxfordian which means that it is between 157 and 163 million years old. In this period after the second mass extinction there were many ammonite species. France is also known for its rich variety of species.
In contrast to the Moroccan ammonites and the ammonites from Madagascar , few French copies are offered. We are therefore very happy that we were able to purchase these ammonites from a French amateur geologist. This man spends many hours a year looking for the most beautiful French ammonites.
What are Ammonites?
Ammonites were a group of mollusks living in the sea, which includes the current squid. Today these animals have their shells inside but the Ammonites still had their shells outside the body, just like snails. The first ammonites appeared about 410 million years ago and grew into a very successful species. They were found worldwide and in large numbers in the oceans. Like the dinosaurs, the ammonites became extinct about 65 million years ago.
