What is a pallasite?
The Brahin meteorite is a palletite, which means that meteorite consists of both iron and stone. Under extreme pressure, the stone section is compressed into beautiful olivines in a nickel / iron mantle. Pallasites are a rarity among meteorites.
The first pieces of the Brahin pallasite were found in 1807. At that time it is the second meteorite ever found in Russia. Sawn pieces of the meteorite come in collections, museums and universities. During the Second World War, pieces were stabbed by German soldiers in Kiev. Also in Minsk disappear pieces of the meteorite.
The Chernobyl nuclear disaster
The nuclear disaster in Chernobyl also affects the location of this meteorite. The zone is now under the periodic control zone and is poorly accessible. The meteorite has not been infected by the incident itself because it has been found deeper underground than the infection has penetrated.
