Brookite, a rare titanium crystal

Beautiful crystal of brookite from Kharan, Balochistan in Pakistan. Brookite is one of the main forms of titanium oxide. It is a polymorph of rutile and anatase. This means that they have the same chemical formula, but in a different crystal form. When you heat brookite above 750 degrees its structure changes to rutile.

Brookite forms characteristic flat crystals in a brown/red to dark green/black colour. The mineral brookite is named after Henry J Brooke, an English mineralogist who specialised in crystallography.
