Meteorite from the Atacama desert
The Calate 002 meteorite was found in 2016 in the Atacama desert in Chile. One of the driest areas on earth. The name is derived from the nearby town of Calate. Various meteorites have been found in the region, all of which have been given the name Calate. The distinction is made in the number behind the name. A total of 14 meteorites have been found in the area that have been given the name Calate 001 to Calate 017. Later the Calate 008 to 010 were removed from the list, as these appeared to be the same meteorites as the previously classified specimens.
L6 chondrite meteorite
A total of 2.2 KG of the Calate 002 was found on 26 October 2016, most of it in smaller fragmented pieces. The meteorite is classified as an L6 chondroit with an average shock phase of S5.
