The impact of the Gao Guenie meteorite
The Gao-Guenie meteorite fell in Burkina Faso on March 5, 1960 at 17:00 local time. After three explosions thousands of stones fell over an area of about 70 square kilometers. The sound of this stone hailstorm was heard up to 100 kilometres away in Ouagadougou. Eyewitnesses spoke of broken trees and chicken houses.
The Gao Guenie is a chondrite that contains the minerals olivine and bronzite. This meteorite also has a high nickel/iron content, which makes it slightly magnetic.
