Beautiful gift box filled with 4 fossils
This gift box is filled with 4 beautiful fossils and contains:
- an orthoceras
- a sea urchin
- a trilobite
- a fossil oyster.
Orthoceras
The orthoceras lived about 400 million years ago and is the forerunner of our current squid. Orthoceras means 'straight horn' referring to the long straight shell of the animals. The soft part was in the shell and with its protruding tentacles it could move. When the creature died, the shell would sink to the bottom where it was covered by sediment, causing the shell to fossilize and be preserved for us even after 400 million years.
Sea urchin
These fossil sea urchins are also called sand dollars. It is a group of sea urchins that once mature live on the bottom of the sea. Only as a larva they can swim around freely, as soon as the round skeleton is formed the sea urchin remains on the bottom.
Trilobite
The Trilobites were arthropods and lived underwater. Many different species lived there millions of years ago, the trilobite in this box belongs to the genus Calymene and was found in Morocco.
Fossil oyster
These fossil shells are remains of the Gryphaea that belonged to the oysters. About 200 million years ago in the early Jurassic this was a very successful species. It is a popular fossil to collect because of its typical shape reminiscent of a claw. This has also given it the nickname devil stone nail.
