Lapis Lazuli is a hard rock that lends itself well to processing and is therefore popular in processed form for jewelry. These polished specimens have a beautiful intense blue color with gold-colored speckled pyrite and white calcite.

A favorite for thousands of years

Lapis Lazuli gets its name from a contraction of the Latin word 'lapis' which means stone and 'lazaward' the old Persian name for the blue stone. Lapis was mined in Afghanistan as early as the 8th century BC. This mineral has also been found as an ornament in the tomb of Tutankhamun.
