Green chalcedony variant
Chrysoprase is a variant of chalcedony and belongs to the quartz family. The name comes from the Greek words: 'Chrys' which means 'gold or yellow' and 'Prason' which means 'leek'. Both names refer to the colors in which chrysoprase can occur, from yellow to green. The amount of nickel is decisive here. We know this mineral mainly from its apple to mint green color.
The Victory Stone
Chrysoprase has been a beloved gemstone for centuries. In ancient Egypt, the stone was associated with fertility. Necklaces have been found with cut pieces of chrysoprase in combination with Lapis lazuli and sodalite. Charlemagne wore a belt in which the stone was incorporated during his campaigns. Chrysoprase was seen as a victory stone in this period.
