These bones are derived from the woolly mammoth. The scientific name for this species is M. primigenius. This hairy elephant had enormous tusks and hair that could hang down to the ground to protect itself from the cold.
Living area of the mammoth
The woolly mammoth occurred in present-day Europe and North America, but the landscape still looked very different at the time. During the ice ages, a lot of water was stored in ice caps and many seas were dry. This allowed the mammoth to spread over large parts of the world.
