Woolly Mammoth

These bones come from the woolly mammoth. The scientific name for this species is M. primigenius. This hairy elephant had huge tusks and hair that could hang to the ground to protect itself from the cold.

Living area of the mammoth

The woolly mammoth was found in today's Europe and North America, but the landscape looked very different at the time. During the ice ages, a lot of water was stored in ice caps and a lot of seas were dry. This allowed the mammoth to spread over large parts of the world.
