Beautiful purple tumbled stones
Sugilite in a relatively new mineral that takes its name from the Japanese discoverer Ken-ichi Sugi. The Sugilite that was discovered in Japan was somewhat brown/yellow in color. In 1979 the beautiful purple variety was found in South Africa after which it got the gem status.
Sugilite became officially a rare gemstone in 1980. Other deposits of this mineral were found afterwards. However, these can be counted on 1 hand and Sugilite remains as a rare mineral.
The color of Sugilite is determined by the presence of manganese. The color can vary from deep pink, purple to blue and everything in between. The mineral is often found in combination with chalcedony or quartz, creating beautiful color combinations. Like in these polished tumbled stones.
