The Muonionalusta is a meteorite with a fine octahedrite structure, classified as type IVA.
The Muonionalusta meteorite is the oldest meteorite known to date and struck northern Scandinavia 1 million years ago. The meteorite has since survived 4 ice ages and has moved several times during this time. The meteorite is almost certainly an asteroid drifting.
Unique meteorite structure
The meteorite is known for its beautiful Widmanstätten structures (octahedrite). This is the triangular structure that becomes visible when the meteorite is etched. These crystal forms are created because the meteorite took millions of years to cool. The structures are therefore unique to meteorites and do not occur on Earth because iron cools down much faster here.
