Shungite or shungite is mineral rock that consists largely of carbon. It is a unique mineral found only in Karelia, Russia. It is also the only rock in the world to contain fullerenes, a newly discovered form of carbon in the form of spherical ions. In 1996, Professor Robert F. Curl Jr., Professor Sir Harold W. Kroto, and Professor Richard E. Smalley were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of fullerenes.

The difference between noble shungite and ordinary shungite is the carbon, and associated fullerenes, content. When Shungite contains 98% carbon, it is called noble shungite. Noble shungite is distinguished by its lower specific gravity and silvery sheen on the surface. Noble shungite is widely used for water purification. Noble shungite can also conduct electricity, an exceptional property for a rock. Noble shungite is fragile, can shed and crumble.
