NWA 869 chondrite meteorite oriented

Around 2000, meteorite hunters discovered a large stray field near Tindouf in an unknown location in the Algerian desert. Nearly 2000 kilos of this rock meteorite were found, named NWA 869. The meteorite comes from the asteroid belt and is referred to as a class L3-6. The fragments found vary enormously in quality. There are parts that have been exposed to desert sand for years and have lost almost all characteristics to the rarer and nicely preserved oriented meteorites.

What is an oriented chondrite?

An oriented chondrite (or meteorite in general) is covered with a melting crust that has flow lines. These have arisen if the meteorite has made a stable journey through the atmosphere where the front has melted and this has flowed backwards due to the speed. In some cases you can see the accumulation of this on the back of the meteorite. Very few fragments remain at the NWA 869 where this is still visible. We are therefore happy with this specially selected selection.
