What is Rhyolite?
Rhyolite is an igneous rock and is pushed to the Earth's surface by volcanic activity. It occurs when granite magma flows calmly from a volcano and the lava cools quickly. When the lava cools so quickly that no crystals can be formed, we speak of volcanic glass, better known as obsidian. When the magma cools down a bit more slowly, rhyolite is formed.
Volcano eruptions of granite magma
Granite magma volcanic eruptions are rare. Only three are known since 1900. The Andrew Strait Volcano in Papua New Guinea, the Novarupta Volcano in Alaska and the Chaiten Volcano in Chile. In the past, the most explosive volcano eruptions have been attributed to granite magma. Examples are Yellowstone in Wyoming, Long Valley in California and Valles in New Mexico.
