Just like Ruby, sapphire belongs to the Corundum family and is therefore the hardest mineral on earth after diamond
Sapphire is mainly known for its blue color. However, all corundum minerals that do not have a red color (red corundum is called ruby) are also grouped under the sapphires. There are also yellow, pink, violet and green sapphires.
History of sapphire
Sapphires have been found in Sri Lanka since ancient times. The sapphire was said to confer strength, honor and immortality on its owner. The stone was so loved that at one point all blue stones were called sapphire. It was not until the 19th century, together with the Ruby, that it got its own classification within the Korund group.
