Beautiful septaria or dragon egg

Septary is formed by drying out tuberous mounds of mud. The resulting shrinkage cracks were filled with calcite. The white calcite contrasts nicely with the often dark background and is therefore sometimes called 'dragon stone'. The septary is slightly polished, so that irregularities in the stone have been preserved.

Popular sites

Although septarian is found all over the world, the most popular sites are Morocco and Madagascar. Septary always originated in the same way, but they look very different per site. Actually, there is never a septary exactly the same, not even from the same site.

Septarian from Madagascar

The Madagascar Septarian is light brown in color. Here, the dark lines formed by aragonite stand out. Calcite is often found in this. The Madagascar septaria also regularly contains fossils that have become stuck in the mud
