Barite is a barium sulphate that belongs to the Barite Group. The group consists of four members: Anglesite a lead sulphate, Barite a barium sulphate, Celestite a strontium sulphate and Hashemite a barium chromate sulphate. Barite is the main source of barium. Barite is widely used by indigenous American tribes in their religious practices. The Indians used barite to travel between the physical and spiritual worlds.

Barite has a wide variety of shapes. From large tabular crystals to a lamella structure. Barite can be colourless, yellow, red, blue, green, brown or black, depending on the mineral content included. Some variants of barite may be fluorescent.
