Melanite is a black garnet from the andradite family. The black color is caused by a high titanium content. Melanite is therefore also known as 'titanium andradite'. The crystals are non-transparent and black in color, although yellow or green accents may occur in the crystal. Although andradite is a common mineral , the black variety is rather rare.
Andradite
Andradite comes in the colors green/olive green, yellow and black. There is a different name for each colour. Black andradite is called 'melanite'. Lively green andradite 'demantoide' and the yellow variant 'topazolite'. Andradite form typical Hexoctahedral crystals according to the cubic system we see in all garnets.
