Kyanite is an aluminum silicate mineral with striped leaf crystals that can be transparent or translucent with a pearl-like shine. Kyanite is known for its blue color but also occurs in white, indigo, green and black.

Kyanite comes from the Greek word: 'kuanos' which means "deep blue". Another name for kyanite is disthene. Kyanite is heat resistant and is often processed in refractory bricks or molds, but also in dentures.
