What is scapolite?

Scapolite is a mineral that belongs to the group of tectosilicates. It is composed of calcium, aluminium, silicon, sodium, and chlorine and has a hardness of 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale. The mineral can have various colours such as white, gray, pink, yellow, blue, and green. The name scapolite is derived from the Greek word "skapos", which means "stick", due to the elongated crystal forms in which the mineral occurs.

How is scapolite formed?

Scapolite often forms in contact metamorphic rocks, where the heat and pressure from magma affect existing rocks. The mineral can also be formed during hydrothermal activity, where hot water solutions flow through cracks in the rock and deposit minerals. Scapolite can occur in crystal forms, as well as in grains or massive aggregates.
