What is amethyst?

Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz and gets its distinctive colour from the presence of iron that is coloured purple by gamma radiation. This natural process takes place over a long period of time and often results in both darker and lighter shades within a crystal.

Amethist means 'not intoxicated' and comes from the ancient Greek word 'Amethystos'. The Greeks thought they could use the crystal to protect themselves from intoxication and that wearing amethyst would keep them from getting drunk. Another explanation is that high lords drank water from an amethyst cup to disguise the fact that there was no wine in it.

Heating of amethyst

Amethist can lose its colour when exposed to heat. When heated above 300 degrees Celsius, the crystal can turn yellow or brown, which is sometimes wrongly sold as citrine. In addition, exposure to sun rays and UV light can cause the crystal to slowly fade. Therefore, it is important not to place amethyst outdoors or expose it to direct sunlight.
