Unique properties
Hackmanite is a rare mineral with very special properties. It is a variety of sodalite that exhibits both tenebrescence and fluorescence. Tenebrescence means that the colour of the mineral changes when held in sunlight. Fluorescence means that the stone itself starts emitting light when shone on with an ultraviolet lamp.
Colour change
Under a UV lamp, hackmanite will emit a pink to orange glow. After shining on the stone, you will see that the colour has become more intense purple. This is also what happens when you place hackmanite in sunlight. This phenomenon is reversible and after lying in a dark place for a while, the intensity of the colour will have decreased again.
