Hematite quartz is a variety of quartz in which inclusions or surface layers of the iron oxide hematite create a distinctive reddish-brown to deep red color. This coloration occurs because hematite deposits itself within or on the quartz crystal during or shortly after its formation. The process usually takes place in hydrothermal environments, where hot, mineral-rich water flows through cracks and cavities in rock. As the quartz crystallizes from this solution, iron compounds such as hematite can precipitate at the same time.
