Green stone with a rich history
Green chalcedony variaty
Chrysoprase is a variety of chalcedony and belongs to the quartz family. The name derives from the Greek words: 'Chrys' which means 'gold or yellow' and 'Prason' which means 'leek'. Both names refer to the colours in which chrysoprase can occur, from yellow to green. The amount of nickel is the determining factor. We know this mineral mainly from its apple green to mint green colour.
The victory stone
Chrysoprase has been a beloved gem for centuries. In ancient Egypt the stone was associated with fertility. There are necklaces found with cut pieces of chrysoprase in combination with Lapis lazuli and sodalite. Charlemagne wore a belt in which the stone was incorporated during his campaigns. Chrysoprase was seen as a victory stone in that period.
Working of chrysoprase
