What is a crystal?

A crystal is formed by a specific arrangement of mineral molecules. Each mineral has a different geometric pattern. Crystals can take thousands to millions of years to grow to their final shape and vary in size from a tenth of a millimeter to several meters long. Would you like to know more about crystals and what the largest crystal in the world is? Then read our blog: How do crystals form?

Use of crystals in ancient times

Apart from the fact that crystals are beautiful to look at, they are very popular among collectors and have been used for centuries as a protective amulet or in healing. The ancient Egyptians used crystals to make jewelry and amulets. These had to offer protection during long journeys, improve health or prevent nightmares. The Ancient Greeks also used crystals and the word 'crystal' is derived from the Greek word for ice. The Greeks thought that rock crystal was ice that had frozen so deep that it did not melt anymore.

The use of crystals nowdays

Nowadays, the use of crystals is very popular once again. Many healings are supported by crystals. Most methods are based on old traditions that still contain a lot of knowledge. Also for spiritual and religious purposes, crystals are almost indispensable. In an increasingly digital world, there is a growing need for earthly reality.
