Green Hiddenite

The yellow to green crystals of the mineral Spodumene are called Hiddenite after William Earl Hidden who first got hold of the new material in 1879. The yellow to green colour is caused by the presence of chromium in the crystal. Hiddenite is a popular gemstone because of its brightness and is brighter or paler in colour depending on the viewing angle. Be careful with bright light or sunlight, this can cause the colour of Hiddenite to fade.

Spodumene

The pink to purple variety is Kunzite and the yellow to green variety is Hiddenite. Spodumene is an important source for the extraction of lithium.
