This fluorescent syenite sodalite, known by its trade name 'Yooperlite' lights up beautifully orange under a UV lamp. Read more.
Fluorescent sodalite
Syenite is a coarse-grained igneous rock formed when molten lava slowly cooled below the earth's surface. It has a similar composition to granite but with much less or even no quartz. The UV reaction in this stone is due to the presence of fluorescent sodalite.
Yooperlite
The name 'Yooperlite' is a trade name for syenite with sodalite found around Lake Superior in the USA. However, this rock is found in more places around the World and these are also called 'Yooperlite' for convenience. These pieces are not from the USA and therefore do not officially fall under the trade name 'Yooperlite'.
Magic stone
Because of its hidden colourfulness, Syenite sodalite is considered a magic stone. An amplifier of messages and a guide during spiritual journeys. The stone can bring calmness and tranquillity in times of fatigue and stress.
What is fluorescence?
Fluorescence is a form of luminescence in which a particular substance emits light at the same time as it absorbs light (or other electromagnetic radiation). The name fluorescence is derived from the mineral fluorite in which this phenomenon was first observed. Minerals can give off a completely different colour under UV light than they do under daylight.
