A beautiful tooth of the Mosasaurus
The Maas Lizard
The Mosasaurus is a saur that inhabited the seas during the Late Cretaceous (71.3–65.4 million years ago). The first fossil remains of the Mosasaurus were found near Maastricht. The Mosasaurus is therefore named after the Meuse and is also called the Maas Lizard in Dutch. This tooth was found in the phosphate mines in Morocco.
Enormous marine reptiles.
These marine reptiles were one of the largest of their kind and could grow up to 18 meters long! Comparable to a fully grown sperm whale.
The fossil Mosasaurus tooth has been carefully prepared. Fossil teeth are not always found complete; due to millions of years of pressure, erosion, and movement within the geological layers, they can break or emerge from the rock in multiple pieces. When necessary, fragments are neatly glued back together afterwards. This type of restoration is very normal and accepted within the fossil world.
