Origin, formation and sites
Nice combination of a real fossil Mosasaurus tooth with a 3D print of a Mosasaurus skull. The tooth is an authentic fossil from the Late Cretaceous, while the skull shows how such a tooth originally sat in the jaw of this impressive marine reptile.
The Mosasaurus lived approximately 70 to 66 million years ago. It was not a dinosaur, but a large marine reptile that was fully adapted to life in the sea. With its powerful jaws, streamlined body, and sharp teeth, it ranked high in the food chain of the Cretaceous seas.
The fossil tooth originates from Morocco, a country known for its rich Cretaceous finds. Teeth and bone fragments of marine reptiles are regularly found in these ancient deposits. The included 3D print of the skull is approximately 10 cm long and makes a nice educational model alongside the real fossil.
History and naming
The name Mosasaurus means “Maas reptile”. The first important fossils of this animal were found in the vicinity of Maastricht, near the Meuse. This discovery played an important role in the early history of paleontology and helped scientists understand that animals that are now extinct once lived there.
Due to its impressive appearance, the Mosasaurus is now also known to a wider audience, partly thanks to films such as Jurassic World. In reality, the animal was already spectacular enough: a large marine reptile with a powerful bite and teeth perfectly suited to grasping prey.
This set makes that story even more tangible. The real tooth shows an original piece of prehistory, while the skull print helps to better understand the shape and function of the tooth. This makes it an attractive combination for collectors, children, and fossil enthusiasts.
Interaction, care and safety
The fossil Mosasaurus tooth has been carefully prepared. Fossil teeth are not always found complete; due to millions of years of pressure, erosion, and movement within the geological layers, they can break or emerge from the rock in multiple pieces. When necessary, fragments are neatly glued back together afterwards. This type of restoration is very normal and accepted within the fossil world.
The skull is a licensed print made with a 3D printer. As a result, small layer lines or slight imperfections may be visible. This is part of the 3D printing production process and makes each piece slightly different.
Store the tooth and skull in a stable place and avoid dropping or hard impacts. Cleaning is best done dry with a soft brush or cloth. Do not use water, cleaning agents, or chemical products. Due to the pointed shapes and small details, this set is not suitable as a toy for young children.
