Stichtite was first discovered in 1910 in Dundas, Tasmania, Australia. It is named after Robert Carl Sticht, who was the manager of the nearby copper mine at the time. The stone has a purplish-pink colour. Sometimes it is found as dark purple inclusions in green serpentine, this variety is also called tasmanite or atlantisite.

What kind of mineral is stichtite?

The mineral stichtite is a hydrated magnesium chromium carbonate, and is mainly found in igneous and metamorphic rocks. It is formed as an alteration product of chromite-containing serpentine and is found in various parts of the world, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Morocco, Russia, Scotland and Sweden. Stichtite is soft with a Mohs hardness of 1-1/2 to 2 and therefore needs careful handling. You can clean it with a soft, dry cloth or warm soapy water. Avoid using harsh cleaners with bleach and acid. Also, do not use ultrasonic cleaners or steamers.
