Beautiful purple mineral from South Africa

Sugilite is a relatively new mineral that takes its name from the Japanese discoverer: Ken-ichi Sugi. The Sugilite that was discovered in Japan is somewhat brown/yellow in color. It was not until 1979 that the beautiful purple variant was found in South Africa, after which it received the gemstone status.

Rare gemstone

Sugilite officially became a rare gemstone in 1980. Other deposits of this mineral have been found afterwards. However, these can be counted on one hand and Sugilite remains known as a rare mineral.
