Veined gemstone

Sardonyx is a variety of chalcedony and belongs to the quartz group. The most common colours are red, brown, white and black, which are usually built up in layers. The name is derived from the Greek where sard means "reddish brown" and onyx "veined gemstone".

Stone of the people

Sardonyx has been a popular gemstone since ancient times and was worn as an amulet. Because of its general appearance, it was also an accessible stone for the common people and amulets were carved from Sardonyx, whether or not in the form of the gods.

Hinduism

The most famous sardonyx comes from India and is hand cut in the shape of an eye which symbolises the third eye of Shiva in Hinduism. These hand-cut eyes are used in home as protection, so that there is always an extra eye watching over them.

Protective stone

Sardonyx is seen as a grounding and protective stone. It channels energy and can, in the form of a Shiva eye, protect the house or a room against negative energy. An extra eye that watches over the residents and connects the energies with each other.
