Product description

Ice Age in the Netherlands

Ice ages occurred frequently during the Pleistocene (2.58 million to 11,700 years ago). Warmer moments alternated with bitterly cold periods (glacials). Much of the European land was regularly covered in ice and snow. The Netherlands also experienced extreme cold, with temperatures dropping to -30 °C! Still, plenty of life could be found on the frozen Dutch soil.

Mammals

Mammals thrived during the alternating warm and cold periods. They often had thick, hairy coats to keep themselves warm. The most well-known inhabitants of this time are undoubtedly the woolly mammoth and the mastodon. Read more about these animals in our blog. But there were also aurochs (the ancestors of our cows), wild boars, (primitive) horses, deer, and even rhinoceroses.

Set with Dutch History

This set consists of three bones from different mammals that lived in the Dutch landscape during the Ice Age. They come from an old collection. Some of the bones still bear a code; unfortunately, the list with the corresponding information has been lost. We left the codes in place, just in case they are ever recovered.
