Dancing Dragons Meteorite
The Nantan meteorite was discovered in 1958, but likely fell as early as 1516. Writings from that period have been found that indicate that during that period, "stars came down from the sky, dancing like dragons, as bright as lightning."
Almost lost
During China's Great Leap Forward, the search for iron for the growing industry was intense. In 1958, they discovered the Nantan meteorite and immediately attempted to smelt it. Fortunately, this was unsuccessful due to its high nickel content, and the meteorite was thus spared.
Nantan in China
The Nantan meteorite is named after the nearby city of Nantan in China. Because it took many centuries for the Nantan meteorite to be identified as such, most pieces have rusted considerably. It is therefore advisable to store this meteorite in an airtight container.
