Unique for Tanzania
Tanzanite is a purple/blue variety of zoisite and is only found in Tanzania. It was first found in 1967 in the Umba valley near the Usambara Mountains by Indian Manuel de Souza. At first he thought he had found sapphires, but the discovery turned out to be more remarkable.
Blue-violet in colour
The violet to deep blue colour had not been observed in Zoisite before. Zoisite is usually green or brownish in colour. The clear tanzanite crystals are very popular in jewelry.
