Box with 4 meteorites
Field of Sky
This iron meteorite hit the border of the provinces of Gran Chaco and Santiago del Estero in Argentina about 5,000 years ago. The impact created no less than 26 craters over an area of 60km². The largest crater has a diameter of 70 meters and is about 5 meters deep.
Chondrite
This meteorite was brought from the desert by nomads and brought to Europe via Morocco. There are many classifications within meteorites, this meteorite is not officially classified. The external structure (fusion crust and fracture lines) do tell us that it is 100% certain to be a meteorite. The meteorite is not made of metal so it is a chondrite or stone meteorite.
Mesosiderite
Mesosiderites of class A1, the class to which Vaca Muerta belongs, are particularly rare. These stony-iron meteorites combine silicates and metals, suggesting a turbulent history of cosmic collisions and mixing of material from different parts of an asteroid. Vaca Muerta’s composition includes eucrite, a basaltic mineral that provides insight into the crust of its parent body. This complex mix suggests that Vaca Muerta’s material came from the core, mantle, and crust of an asteroid, mixed by massive impacts early in the formation of our solar system.
Tektite
An indochinite tektite is a black molten piece of rock and sand that forms during a meteorite impact. The enormous heat of a meteorite impact melts a mixture of extraterrestrial and terrestrial sand and rock into glass. The force of the impact causes these molten pieces to be thrown over a huge distance. After a meteorite impact, it rains glass droplets in the wide area. With these black tektites, the drop shape of the devastating 'glass rain' can be clearly seen.
