What is Hyalite opal?

Hyalite opal is a not very common variant of an already rare gemstone. It looks like transparent glass spheres and comes to life in bright green under a shoirt wave UV light. The name Hyalite is derived from the Greek word 'hialos' meaning glass. The green fluorescence is due to the presence of uranium, which is fortunately well encapsulated and, with its low value, poses no danger.

How is hyalite opal formed?

Hyalite opal is a mixture of water and silica that has formed a deposit over many thousands of years. In this process, the water evaporated and the silicon was left behind as dried droplets. Contaminated with a minimal amount of uranium, the, usually translucent mineral lights up bright green under UV.
