Historical use of jade
Nephrite is a green mineral that belongs to the jade group together with jadeite. It has been a popular mineral for decorative objects and tools since ancient times. Magical objects were already made in Babylon, and in China it was very popular for religious ceremonies. The green stone was also known in Central America long before the arrival of Columbus. Due to its toughness, the stone is easy to work with.
Nephrite is the most common Jade mineral. The other jade mineral jadeite is much rarer. The name is derived from the Greek word “nephros” which means “kidney”. This is because of the nephrite pebbles that can have a kidney-shaped appearance. Nowadays serpentine is also offered as jade. This is sometimes referred to as 'China jade', but that name is not correct. Serpentine is not part of the jade family. Read more about serpentine here .
