Phantom Amethyst

During the growth process of amethyst, periods of radiation can occur, which have a direct influence on the color of the crystal. Amethyst, known for its beautiful purple hue, gets its color from iron particles in the quartz that are affected by natural radiation. When the crystal is exposed to this radiation, it causes a change in the valence state of the iron, resulting in the deep purple color characteristic of amethyst. These radiation periods can vary in intensity and duration, leading to the formation of 'phantoms' or ghostly silhouettes that mark the different growth phases of the crystal. Each of these phases captures a moment in time, just as growth rings do in trees. These layers are a visual record of the conditions under which the crystal grew, including variations in minerals, temperature, and radiation levels.

What is amethyst?

Here you will find beautiful pieces of amethyst from various deposits, including Uruguay, Brazil and South Africa. Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz and gets its distinctive colour from the presence of iron that is coloured purple by gamma radiation. This natural process takes place over a long period of time and often results in both darker and lighter shades within a crystal.

Not drunk

Amethist means 'not intoxicated' and comes from the ancient Greek word 'Amethystos'. The Greeks thought they could use the crystal to protect themselves from intoxication and that wearing amethyst would keep them from getting drunk. Another explanation is that high lords drank water from an amethyst cup to disguise the fact that there was no wine in it.

Heating of amethyst

Amethist can lose its colour when exposed to heat. When heated above 300 degrees Celsius, the crystal can turn yellow or brown, which is sometimes wrongly sold as citrine. In addition, exposure to sun rays and UV light can cause the crystal to slowly fade. Therefore, it is important not to place amethyst outdoors or expose it to direct sunlight.

Brightening amethyst

Amethist is known for its calming and clarifying properties, making people feel comfortable, grounded and comforted. It helps in centring emotions and recovering from grief or loss. Amethyst promotes deep transformations in our lives and helps make decisions, find inspiration and create space for courage and peace. It is also a suitable stone for tempering anger and supporting family and relationship dynamics. For addictions, amethyst can help clear the mind and overcome them.
